Stone Chapel Back Entrance

This image may show the Stone Chapel. The Stone Chapel was built in 1875 and was used jointly by the Theological Seminary and the Academy. It had been originally planned to be built in 1864, but due to promised funds not coming in, its construction was delayed about ten years. It was a more ornate version of the Old Main Building Chapel with buttresses, hanging chandeliers and traditional pews rather than benches. The bell tower’s bell was a facsimile of the Independence Bell and was inscribed and dedicated to the memory of the first signer of the Declaration of Independence, Josiah Bartlett. It hosted its last service June 20, 1931 and then was demolished shortly thereafter.
