Swimming hole in Cochran Bird Sanctuary

A still black and white image of a swimming hole. There are several swimmers on a raft and in the water with a few others on shore. The pond is surrounded by trees.

This is likely an image of the Bobby Thompson Pond. It was named after Robert Torrey Thompson, P. A. Class of 1936, who died in a training accident as a member of the Army Air Corps on April 9, 1941. The pond was made into a swimming hole in 1942 and had a sandy beach made from sand from Crane's Beach in Ipswich, MA. In 1955, a hot dry summer caused a drought and the school to stop pumping fresh water into the pond. As a result, the pond became contaminated and was closed to swimming.
