Description
The Curtis Marshmallow company, a family owned business by a brother and sister team, Amory and Emma Curtis, opened in 1913.
Their signature product was the Snowflake Marshmallow crème, which won a prestigious gold medal award at the Panama Pacific Exposition in 1915. On an early leaflet from 1918, they featured a recipe for the Liberty Sandwich, a precursor to the well-known Fluffernutter sandwich: peanut butter and marshmallow crème on whole grain bread.
The factory was located at 33 Crystal Street in Melrose, across the street from what is now the tennis courts, until it was demolished in 1968.
