TRACKS:Mr. Swan's background -- Reasons that many people immigrated to Rockport, beginnings of granite industry on Cape Ann -- Different ethnic groups settled in different sections of town, churches -- Adjustments made by Swedish immigrants - language, etc. -- Swedish immigrants became quickly established and improved their situations, description of difficult work conditions in granite industry -- Frugality - living off the land, responsibilities held by the children - chores, making paving blocks to supplement income -- Strikes in the granite industry, closing down of quarries - possible reasons, the breakwater in Sandy Bay -- Offspring of Swedish immigrants - a great many made good -- Offspring of immigrants (cont'd.) - apparent ambition plus natural ability, Mr. Swan's experience working to gain an education, working in the land of opportunity -- Mr. Swan lectures on Cape Ann history, etc., the entire U.S. Navy in Rockport - the white fleet -- The May Walk of the Village Improvement Society.
